Broadway gossip columnist Jimmy Russell is in love with young, ambitious actress Mary Wodehouse, and promotes her in his column whenever he can. Mary has written some bad checks, but before Jimmy can make arrangements for her to pay them off, gangster Eddie Shaw buys them back. Shaw is the same gangster who is involved in a milk racket being exposed by Jimmy’s paper, the New York Globe . He has his cohort, Bernie Olds warn Jimmy off the story and then, after sending Jimmy to Atlantic City through a ruse, uses the checks to force Mary to come to his penthouse. Determined to save Mary, her aunt Hattie visits Shaw instead. Jimmy escapes from Atlantic City and arrives at Shaw’s apartment just in time to see Hattie hide a gun in the flowers. Inside, Shaw is dead. Jimmy throws his body over the edge of the building to make his demise look like suicide, but fellow reporter Stanley Fiske sees him do it and, assuming that he committed the murder, steals the gun. The verdict is suicide, but when Jimmy receives a telegram from Mary announcing her marriage to producer Max Boncour, who is to star her in his next play, he takes the evidence that Stanley stole to protect him and mails it to Hattie to let her know that he knows the truth. Vowing that he will never fall in love again, Jimmy tells Stanley and his friend, Sally, that love is a racket and winks at Sally to prove it. More on Wikipedia or Mubi
