Mammy (1930)

Al Fuller joins up with a group of hoboes–Slats, Flat Feet, and Pig Eyes–entertaining them with his songs and good humor. As they go to sleep around an open fire, he recalls the circumstances that led him to his present plight: As the end man in the Meadow Merry Minstrels, he is in love with Nora, the owner’s daughter, who has a weakness for Westy, also in the act. The show is constantly in desperate straits, and when Al tries hard to amuse the local sheriff, they are surprised to learn he wants to invest in and join the act. They become prosperous and Al is able to go home to see his mother. Hoping to help Nora, he avows his love for her, provoking Westy’s jealousy. Tambo, who has been exposed cheating at cards, causes Westy to be wounded in the act by Al. He is arrested but escapes on a freight bound for home; eventually Tambo confesses to the deed, and Al is thus proven innocent. More on Wikipedia or Mubi
