Feeling responsible for the death of Fred Smith (Edwin Stanley), one of his workers — construction foreman Jim Gladden (Warner Baxter) — tries to make good on the dying man’s plea that Jim look after his family. In Scotch Valley, Jim meets Sally (Marian Nixon), the eldest daughter of the Smith family, and he begins adoption proceedings for the rest of the Smith children. Meanwhile, Jim’s attracted to Olive (Lucille Powers), from another Smith family, and learns that Sally’s neighbor Sam Pelgram (David Landau) has been treating the Smith children viciously.
