Du Barry, Woman of Passion (1930)

Jeannette Vaubernier, an impulsive shopgirl en route to deliver a hat, dreams of luxury and position as she saunters through the woods, and attracted by a pool of water, she disrobes and plunges in. Cosse de Brissac, a handsome private in the King’s Guards, comes to her rescue and they become sweethearts. Meanwhile, Jean Du Barry, a shrewd roué, takes note of her at the millinery shop and tricks her into staying at La Gourda’s, where she soon becomes a favorite among the men. Louis XV, seeing her at the opera, arranges a meeting; and just as she is about to elope with young Brissac, the king offers her all she desires. She is admitted to court, where her marriage to Du Barry is arranged, though she still loves Brissac and is upbraided by the king for her lack of gratitude. The Pacte de Famine forces the people to pay high prices for grain, causing a revolt; meanwhile, the king orders a lavish feast in Jeannette’s honor. Brissac, leading the mob, seeks revenge on the king, but he is captured and ordered executed; just before the command to fire, Jeannette opens the gates, and the people storm the palace. As a result, Jeannette is taken to prison with the cry, “The guillotine for Du Barry”; and though Brissac pleads for her life, the revolutionaries are obdurate. Reaffirming their mutual love, Brissac renounces the revolutionary cause and prepares to die with her. More on Wikipedia or Mubi
