Joan, unjustly convicted of theft, is sheltered by Mrs. Radcliffe, a society woman, and her lawyer William Mortimer, when the train taking her to prison is wrecked. Her newfound friends, who are passengers on the train, are actually planning to steal a famous diamond from Ronald Stanhope, a client of Mortimer. They offer their aid to Joan with the thought that she will help them with the robbery. Joan and Ronald fall in love, but Joan refuses his offer of marriage because she is afraid that Ronald, who knows nothing of her past, will break with her when he finds out the truth. Mrs. Radcliffe knows that someone else has confessed to the crime that Joan is accused of committing, but she does not tell her because she needs the diamond to restore her fortune, which was lost in the stock market crash. While everyone is on another train headed for California, a second train wreck occurs and Mrs. Radcliffe confesses her crimes on her deathbed, thus clearing the way for Joan and Ronald to unite.
