The Fighting Code (1933)

Ben Halliday stumbles upon a dead man and after discovering several letters in the man’s saddlebag, concludes that his name is Grover Jones. According to the letters, Grover was on his way to his hometown of Colfax, Idaho, to help his sister Helen defend their property from the villainous Joshua La Plante and his henchman, Krull. When Ben meets Helen, he learns that she has never met her brother and decides to pose as Grover in order to help her. Later, as Krull reports to a distrustful Helen that her ranch hand Barry is rustling her cattle, Ben intercedes and orders Krull off her property. That night as Helen explains that their father Cameron is believed to have committed suicide to avoid paying his debts, Krull tries to shoot Ben. The next day, Barry, Helen and Ben ride into town to the bank Cameron once owned to visit his friends Judge Williams and Joshua La Plante. After they leave, Joshua realizes that Ben is not Grover. Joshua has Krull murder a surveyor and then frames Ben for the crime. Ben is arrested, and in jail he meets Crosby, a friend of Cameron, who tells him that Cameron had invested $100,000 in Denver bonds. When Helen visits, Ben finally admits to her that he is not Grover. She leaves broken-hearted and tells Barry that Joshua owns the desert land adjoining her property. Barry tells this news to Ben, who later escapes from jail and joins him. Ben and Barry go to Joshua’s office and hide in a wardrobe closet when Joshua and Krull enter. The two men quarrel and Krull kills Joshua. Having seen this, Ben and Barry escape through a trap door. In their haste, their noise gives them away and Krull hurries out. Ben prevents Krull’s escape and after a fistfight, Krull is turned over to the sheriff. Ben explains that Cameron was killed by Krull so that Joshua could steal his bonds and obtain his river land to water his own desert property. Then, Ben explains to Helen that Barry is really her brother and she happily admits she would prefer to be Ben’s wife than his sister. More on Wikipedia
