Spencer Brown, an elevator operator in a small town hotel, is secretly in love with Norma Baker, a cigar counter clerk, who is also Mayor Martin Sloan’s niece. Spencer and his partner, Harry Bayliss, perfect a dictagraph just as the town’s mayoral election is progressing. Sloan’s opponent, George Diamond, is forced out of the race by the heretofore timid Spencer, who uses the new device to record Diamond’s voice while he is talking about doing something illegal. Never aware of Spencer’s feelings, Norma falls in love with George, and Spencer accepts his romantic defeat in silence. More on Wikipedia
