After his employer dies, horse trainer Steve Rowan reluctantly turns the ownership papers for “Galaxy” to crooked bookie Joe Montgomery. Since bookies are not allowed to race horses, Joe puts the horse in his girl friend Gloria Lee’s name and asks Steve to stay on as trainer. Steve agrees only out of love for “Galaxy” and warns Joe that he refuses to go along with any illegal activities. Because he has bet against the horse, Joe becomes concerned when Steve assures him that “Galaxy” will win the Temple Stakes race, so he pays a jockey to crowd “Galaxy” on the track, and the horse crashes through a fence. The injured “Galaxy” loses the race. Previously indifferent to horses, Gloria has unexpectedly developed a fondness for “Galaxy” and for horseracing. Steve does not believe that she was not involved in fixing the race, however, and resigns as “Galaxy’s” trainer. Gloria refuses to allow Joe to shoot the horse, and instead, takes the horse with her to California, where she hopes he will heal, and where she can work at a nightclub away from Joe. Gloria boards herself and “Galaxy” at a farm owned by Clint and Martha Evans, a kindly, older couple. Steve has been hired by beautiful and wealthy racehorse owner Henrietta Fairfax to train her horse “Memento” in California. One day to his surprise, he sees “Galaxy” in a field and discovers that the horse has healed. He offers to buy the horse, but Gloria refuses to sell. Later, when he sees the horse being badly trained, Steve agrees to train him on his own time. Steve falls in love with Gloria during training and realizes his initial poor opinion of her was unfounded. He decides to quit working for Henrietta when his contract is up, and she is disappointed because she is in love with him as well. When Clint spends the $750 Gloria has saved for “Galaxy’s” entrance fee in the next race, she accepts $1,000 from Joe as a repayment of a debt he owed her. After the board of stewards finds out the source of her money and bars her from the track, Steve loses faith in Gloria, so she boards a train for the East coast. Clint alerts Steve that Joe is betting heavily on “Memento” to win, so Steve tricks Joe into confessing his plans to fix the race, and gets Henrietta’s help in entering “Galaxy” in the race. Clint rushes by airplane to find Gloria, and when they arrive at the track, they are thrown out because she has been barred. Steve fights with a police officer, and after they are all arrested, they are forced to listen to “Galaxy” win the race over the radio in the police truck, where Steve and Gloria reunite.
