Based on Robert Crumb’s underground comics from the 60s, this film remains the most commercially successful independent animated feature ever made. It famously has the distinction of being the first animated film to be given an X-rating, due to its political content, sexual imagery and depiction of drug use. Ralph Bakshi (1938) is a sometimes controversial award-winning animator, known for Fritz the Cat (1972), Heavy Traffic (1973), Coonskin (1975), Wizards (1977), The Lord of the Rings (1978), Fire and Ice (1983), and Cool World (1992).
