Goodbye Love (1933)

Both Chester Hamilton and his butler, Groggs, are plagued by alimony troubles. Because he offered his ex-wife Sandra only half of the amount that the divorce judge ordered him to pay, Chester becomes a member of the “alimony club” at the county jail. From jail, Chester arranges with Dorothy, his secretary, to buy stocks under her name so that Sandra will believe he is broke. Groggs invests his money in the same stocks, hoping to make enough cash to pay his ex-wife Laura her alimony. The stock, however, nosedives, and Groggs ends up in jail with Chester. After hearing his story, Chester advances Groggs enough money to cover his alimony payment, but instead of giving the money to Laura, Groggs decides to spend it on a vacation in Atlantic City. There, Groggs meets Phyllis, a beautiful gold digger who is posing as an heiress. To impress Phyllis, the oblivious Groggs decides to pose as Sir Oswald Groggs, a famous big-game hunter. Phyllis beguiles Groggs out of a diamond ring, $2,200 and, finally, her hotel bill. The now-depressed and poor Groggs returns to Chester’s apartment just as a clergyman pronounces Phyllis and Chester man and wife. Groggs tells his story to Dorothy and Brooks, a noted columnist and friend of Chester, who then tells Chester the truth about Phyllis. After showing Chester intimate photographs of Phyllis, whose real name is Fanny Malone, with various wealthy men, Brooks agrees to help his friend out of his marriage. Using a professional co-respondent, Brooks succeeds in getting Chester arrested just before he is to sail on his honeymoon. Phyllis then is confronted by Groggs, who claims he is Chester’s landlord. After Phyllis invents an excuse for her Atlantic City abandonment, she receives a telegram from Chester informing her that the entire Hamilton fortune has been confiscated. Still believing that Groggs is a lord, Phyllis divorces Chester and prepares to marry Groggs. Before the wedding, however, Groggs gets drunk and swallows the ring. Sandra then arrives and exposes Groggs as Chester’s butler. The clergyman is about to leave when Brooks ushers him over to the waiting Chester and Dorothy. More on Wikipedia
