The story of Peter Tomich, one of the heroes of the battle for Pearl Harbour. Among the first victims of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, which started the Second World War in the Pacific, was the American battleship Utah. Hit by two torpedoes, it suddenly began to capsize, and only the courage and selflessness of the chief engineer, Petar Tomich, prevented the explosion of the boilers and major casualties among the crew. For his act of heroism, in which he lost his life, Tomich was posthumously awarded America’s highest decoration for bravery, the Medal of Honor, awarded by the United States Government. And as exciting as the life and death of this Croatian emigrant was, the search for his descendants to whom the medal would be presented was just as exciting. After nearly a decade of searching and proving, and even court proceedings, retired American rear admiral Robert Lunney found Tomich’s descendants in Prolog, Herzegovina. After six and a half decades, one of the few unissued Medals of Honor was awarded to the family of Petar Herceg Tomich on the deck of the US Navy’s largest aircraft carrier, Enterprise, anchored in 2006 in front of Split.
