Reclusive British artist Priam Farrel, who has a terrible fear of publicity, allows a visiting doctor to believe that he is his valet, Henry Leek, who is sick with pneumonia in Farrel’s bed. When Leek dies, Farrel’s half-hearted efforts to establish his identity are spurned by all. Alice, a young widow who had been corresponding with Leek through the Matrimonial Times , also mistakes Farrel for Leek, and the two fall in love. Though he is distressed to see Leek buried as Farrel in Westminster Abbey, Farrel resigns himself to his new life and is happily married to Alice. Years later, Farrel’s new paintings draw the attention of Oxford, an art dealer who stakes his professional reputation on his claim that Farrel is still alive and painting. Leek’s abandoned wife also locates Farrel and identifies him as Leek, and the issue of Farrel’s identity is finally taken to court, where two moles on Farrel’s neck settle the matter. Alice, who has stuck by her husband in both his identities, leaves London with Farrel to find a new, quiet life. More on Wikipedia or Mubi
