In 1910, Faro Lil Payton takes her one-year-old son Jeff and retires from her successful business running a Nevada gambling house. She invests her earnings, but in 1931, after she loses her money in the stock market, she decides to return to her former trade. Lil’s only ambition is to see Jeff succeed in society. Jeff is in love with Maureen Winfield, the daughter of a Wall Street financier. Lil tries to keep her new occupation a secret from her son, but when he, Maureen and her father arrive in Reno, they discover the truth. Winfield does not approve of Lil and her down-to-earth ways. When he, himself, loses everything in the stock market, he tries to win more money by gambling. Lil deals the game herself and Winfield accuses her of cheating. Maureen takes Lil’s side, but to Lil’s disappointment, Jeff sides with Winfield. Distraught, Winfield tries to commit suicide. His attempt fails and he clears Lil when he recovers. Afterward, Lil and Jeff are reconciled. More on Wikipedia
