The Fighting Champ (1932)

Brick Loring, a cowboy who is looking for a job, sees a stagecoach holdup and thwarts it by capturing one of the bandits. In the stagecoach are fighter Spike Sullivan and his boxing promoter, Nifty Harmon. In town, Harmon sets up a fight between Sullivan and rancher Fred Mullins’ foreman, Jock Malone. When Brick turns the bandit over to Sheriff Jim Cosgrove, the sheriff introduces him to Jean Mullins, Fred’s niece. Malone, jealous of any attention paid to Jean, fights with Brick and is knocked out. Mullins, to protect the bets on the fight, hires Brick at his Double Bar H ranch and plans to train him as a boxer. Unaware that another fighter has been selected, Harmon offers Malone a bribe to throw the fight and Malone accepts. Brick starts training for the fight, and while doing roadwork meets Harmon, who offers him the same deal he offered Malone. Brick pretends to think over the offer in order to get a ride back to the ranch. Malone overhears the conversation and reports back to Mullins and the hands. When Mullins confronts Brick, he denies that he was planning to throw the fight. Jean believes him, but Mullins tells him that he had better win or there will be trouble. On the day of the fight, Malone poisons the coffee so that Brick is ill as the fight begins and eventually cannot go on. The sheriff steps in to prevent a fight as Mullins’ people accuse Harmon and Brick of a fix. After Brick is examined by a doctor who affirms that he is really ill, the meet is declared to be valid with the bets to be paid. Harmon escapes the mob and is confronted by Malone, who wants his cut. When Harmon refuses to pay up, Malone steals his money and rides off. Both boxers follow and Brick fights Malone. Jean brings the poisoned coffee and when Malone refuses to drink it, the truth is known. The sheriff declares that the bets are off because the fight was not fair, and Brick and Jean go off to get better acquainted. More on Wikipedia
