The Girl from Calgary (1932)

New York press agent Larry Boyd, with his friend, Monte Cooper, meets Canadian rodeo rider Fifi Follette and encourages her to enter in the Atlantic City beauty contest, which she wins. With the help of Earl Darrell, Larry interests Broadway producer Bill Webster in Fifi, and he puts her in a Broadway play as his “discovery.” Although Fifi is in love with Larry, he says goodbye to her via a telegram because Webster wants him out of the way so he can marry her. While Webster is supposedly in Paris to obtain a divorce, Darrell installs Fifi in Webster’s apartment. Larry returns upon hearing this news and tells Fifi that he left because he thought he was doing her a favor, but now sees that Webster’s proposal is a publicity stunt designed to take advantage of her. Webster, who never really went to Paris, returns to find Larry and Fifi leaving together and sends his henchmen after them. Although the thugs’ brutal beating sends Larry into the hospital, Fifi goes on with her show, but leaves immediately after to be with Larry during his recovery. They agree to move together to a place where they will be unhindered by publicity. More on Wikipedia
