Prizefighter Jimmy Milligan unintentionally strikes a fatal blow to his opponent and friend, Lefty Doyle, who has a weak heart. Before he dies, Lefty assures Jimmy that he is blameless and asks him to check on his sister, Kitty, in Los Angeles. Jimmy brings Kitty Lefty’s effects, and after they fall in love, they become engaged. Kitty breaks their engagement, however, when she finds out that Jimmy caused her brother’s death. One day Goldie, the wife of Kitty’s boss, Zenias, hears a struggle and gunshot while Kitty is in Zenias’s office, and when she rushes in, finds her husband shot. As he dies, Zenias accuses Kitty of trying to extort money from him, and then killing him when he did not give in, although she was actually only trying to fend off his amorous advances. Kitty is arrested, and Jimmy makes a thorough investigation, finding that the Chinese cook, Wong, has some information he would be willing to divulge in court in exchange for a ticket to China. When Jimmy insists that Kitty does not know of his involvement, criminal attorney Benton agrees to handle the case for free. Kitty is crestfallen when she reads that Jimmy plans to fight again, unaware that he hopes to win the money to buy Wong’s ticket. With Wong’s testimony that he saw everything through a peephole, Kitty is acquitted, and Benton takes her to Jimmy’s fight where she sees him win the match. Jimmy and Kitty reconcile and decide to marry immediately. More on Wikipedia
