The Montana Kid (1931)

Burt Burke’s son Andy is arriving soon in Miles City, and Burt celebrates his impending return in the saloon with his pal, Bill Denton. There, Burt gambles with Chuck Larson and loses. Instead of signing an I.O.U. to Larson, Burt is tricked into signing away his ranch. When Burt realizes he didn’t put the amount owed on the note, he tries to get it from Larson, who does not want Burt to see the paper. While Denton is greeting Andy, Larson shoots Burt. After Burt’s death, Denton takes charge of Andy, and they live together on the Burke ranch. Molly Moore, the marshal’s niece, helps out with the housework, and she and Denton fall in love. Seven months after Burt’s death, Larson claims the ranch. Denton suspects Larson is responsible for Burt’s death and is now convinced that Larson is responsible for stealing the ranch as well. To get back at him, Denton becomes a stagecoach robber, stealing only Larson’s money until he has enough to buy the ranch back for Andy. Larson figures out who is responsible for his losses, and as Denton runs from the saloon, Larson shoots at him, hitting Andy, who has come looking for Denton. They escape to the marshal’s, where Molly cares for Andy. Andy’s condition worsens and Molly goes for Denton, unaware that Larson’s men are following her. Denton makes it back to the marshal’s and gives himself up. Larson tries to take Denton from the marshal’s custody, but the marshal’s men stop him. Denton follows Larson, who is now on the run, and kills him in a shootout. The marshal clears Denton, and he and Molly resume their relationship More on Wikipedia
