In 1840s New Orleans, Dixiana, a singer and dancer, is the captivating star of the Cayetano Circus Theatre, a favorite spot of the southern aristocracy, and is sought by Royal Montague, a powerful southern gambler. She falls in love with Carl Van Horn, scion of a wealthy southern family, and agrees to forsake her career to marry him. Taking with her Peewee and Ginger, her faithful circus friends, she goes with Carl to visit the elder Van Horns on their Louisiana plantation. A great ball is held in her honor, but her friends divulge the secret that she is a circus performer and Mrs. Van Horn forces their departure. Refused reemployment by Cayetano, the trio takes work at Montague’s gambling establishment, and Dixiana becomes instrumental in Montague’s plan to ruin Carl financially. She is made Queen of the Mardi Gras but is abducted by Montague, whom Carl challenges to a duel. Dixiana, after detaining Carl, disguises herself and goes to duel in his stead to expose Montague’s treachery. Later, the lovers are reconciled. More on Wikipedia
