Tom Ward, a cocky, irresponsible young football hero, returns home after his college graduation determined to conquer the world without working too hard. He begins a flirtation with Mary Howe, a secretary at the Wall Street brokerage firm, Sutton and Co., which is also the firm of his smug college rival, McAndrews. While in a restaurant, Tom attempts to get Mary alone and away from McAndrews, who is courting her, by bribing a waiter to spill soup on him. Although Tom is offered a local banking job that has been arranged by his hardworking father, Tom turns it down and instead charms his way into a position at Sutton and Co. to be near Mary. Tom soon loses the job, though, when he abandons his duties in order to spend time with her. Tragedy strikes when his father dies suddenly, forcing Tom to assume his place as head of his family, providing support to his mother, younger sister Alma, two brothers Jimmie and Eddie and their loyal housekeeper, Polly. Without their father’s income, the family is quickly sinking into debt, prompting Tom, who now sells ties in a department store, to look for higher paying employment. Willing to give Tom a second chance to prove his worthiness, Mr. Sutton orders McAndrews to assign Tom some work. Wanting to see Tom fail, McAndrews tricks him into taking over the company’s most reluctant potential client, wealthy Hattie Brown, a befuddled, elderly spinster. However, exceeding all expectations, Tom manages to sell bonds to Hattie, a task he accomplishes by posing as a doctor and getting her happily drunk. Enjoying the experience, Hattie consequently decides to take life less seriously. Tom, having stabilized his career, then concentrates on Mary, who has meanwhile become engaged to McAndrews. Desperate to stop her impending marriage, Tom kidnaps Mary from the altar and convinces her that she loves him. More on Wikipedia or Mubi
